Beginner Pilates: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Class

If you’ve been thinking about trying Pilates but aren’t quite sure what to expect, you’re not alone.

Many of clients come to Mind Flow curious about this form of movement, wondering if they’ll be able to keep up or if they need to be flexible and strong to begin their Pilates journey. The truth is, Pilates is for everybody. Starting as a beginner is not only normal, but also the best way to build a solid foundation in this type of movement.

As someone who teaches a mix of beginner-friendly Pilates classes online, in-person, and in private sessions, I’ve seen firsthand how quickly people gain confidence and strength once they take that first class.

So, if you’re ready to join me on the mat, here’s everything you need to know before your first Pilates class at Mind Flow Pilates Studio or anywhere else.

1. Pilates is About Control, Not Competition

One of the first things I tell any new clients is that Pilates is not about who can do the most reps or who can stretch the furthest. It’s about moving with control, precision, and breath awareness.

In your first Pilates class, I’ll guide you through controlled, beginner-friendly movements so you can focus on correct form and breathing rather than trying to mimic the fancy moves you’ve seen floating around online. That may be what piqued your interest in Pilates but as a beginner, you’ll have to work your way up to that.

This slow and mindful approach learning the fundamentals of Pilates not only prevents injury but also ensures you get the most benefit from each exercise.

2. You Don’t Need Fancy Equipment

When people hear “Pilates,” they often picture elaborate reformer machines. While I love the reformer, that’s not the only methos of movement in the Pilates system.

At Mind Flow, I specialized in classical mat Pilates. I always recommend anyone who is new to Pilates to start here in order to really understand the principals of Contrology. All of my beginner classes — including my Follow & Flow Pilates virtual workouts and on-demand Pilates videos — are mat-based. This means you only need a yoga or Pilates mat, comfortable workout clothes, and a willingness to learn.

After a few classes, I’ll suggest small props like resistance bands or a Pilates ball, but these are always based on the student’s abilities to maintain proper form before incorporating te props.

3. We Start Every Class with Journaling

And I say “we” because this is something unique to Mind Flow Pilates.

Every Pilates class I teach begins with 2 minutes of CBT-style journaling (or 5minutes in private sessions) in order to begin establishing mind-bod connection before you begin moving on the mat. Pilates is just as much about mental connection as it is about physical strength, so we take a few moments to set intentions and check in with ourselves.

You might be surprised at how this short practice can completely shift your mindset before we even start moving.

4. Pilates Works Your Whole Body

Many people assume Pilates is all about the core — and while core strength is a big part of it, we also work your arms, legs, back, and glutes.

You’ll notice improvements in your posture, balance, and flexibility as you begin to understand mind-body connection on and off the mat. My beginner sequences are designed to gently challenge you without leaving you feeling overwhelmed.

5. Expect to Feel Muscles You Didn’t Know You Had

It’s not uncommon for Pilates beginners to feel some muscle soreness after their first class — and that’s a good thing!

Pilates activates deep stabilizing muscles that aren’t always targeted in other workouts. I’ll always provide modifications so you can work at your own pace, and you’ll quickly build the strength to take on more advanced movements.

6. Consistency is Key

Like any form of exercise, the benefits of Pilates come with consistent practice.

Whether you join me throughout the week for virtual classes, have a monthly membership to the online studio, or opt for private classes in my Pilates Wellness Program for tailored guidance, showing up regularly will help you see results faster.

The beauty of Pilates is that you can feel the difference in your body even after just a few sessions.

7. Come with an Open Mind

Pilates might be different from anything you’ve tried before — and that’s part of its magic.

I encourage my students to approach each class with curiosity and patience. Remember, it’s not about being perfect; it’s about connecting with your body and mind in a way that supports your overall well-being.
